The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford, Connecticut. It is a residential and day program operating as a state-aided private school. It was established in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in America. The current service load is approximately 215. The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school, and adult service program, utilizing a total communication philosophy. The American School for the Deaf is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs Serving the Deaf, the Departments of Education in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF).
Scope Of Duties
Under the direction of the Program Supervisor or his/her designee, performs a variety of clerical duties.
Primary Duties
(a) Type letters, memoranda, and other reports and documents.
(b) Copy documents as needed.
(c) File documents.
(d) Provide back-up for Receptionist, answers telephone, takes messages, directs people appropriately.
(e) Order supplies.
(f) Communicate with ASD staff; assist in providing information as required.
(g) Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma is required. At least two years work experience in a business environment. Very good organizational skills. Good telephone and greeting skills. Very good interpersonal skills. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. SLPI rating of Intermediate is required, or must be willing to learn and achieve same within two years of hire.
Salary And Benefits
(a) Salary commensurate with union contract salary schedule.
(b) Retirement, group health insurance and other fringe benefits are available for positions working 20 or more hours per week.
(c) The work hours for this position are flexible, but must be in line with standard office needs.
