Role And Responsibility

At Gensler, design is at the center of every project. Design Directors are a select group of designers who are responsible for leading the creative efforts on specific projects. It is the role that provides conceptual interior architecture and stylistic direction resulting in distinctive and successful projects. Design Directors bring new approaches to design process and strategy, they coach and develop next-generation talent, and they represent the firm in the larger design community.

DESIGN DIRECTOR : WORKPLACE — San Francisco

Position Requirements

Candidates for the Design Director position should have a commitment to providing high-quality professional design services for clients in the Workplace market sector. In addition, candidates should have experience working within a creative and collaborative client-focused design environment. Candidates should also have significant experience leading and coaching design teams.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree (or higher) with concentration on interior design or architecture. In addition, it requires at least 12 years of design experience, with at least 5 years of experience in design and leadership on significant corporate and commercial projects.

Since Gensler places a high priority on sustainable design, LEED professional accreditation is preferred.

Candidates should be versatile, self-motivated, and articulate; be experienced in working successfully with others; and have excellent communications skills.

In order to be considered for employment, candidates must be currently eligible to work in the United States and should be able to travel within and outside the USA. Fluency or proficiency in languages in addition to English is particularly advantageous.

Leadership Role

Gensler is organized around a highly collaborative studio leadership model, reflecting its core values and working style. Design Directors work in concert with other colleagues to achieve goals related to project quality and process, while satisfying client requirements — a hallmark of all Gensler projects.

Design Directors play a major leadership role by orchestrating the work of project teams focused on design, development, and delivery of outstanding solutions for the many dimensions of client work.

Design Directors are involved with projects from the initial marketing stages through completion of construction and installation. During the life of a project, a Design Director will work directly with the client, team members, and a wide range of consultants and collaborators both internal and external. In addition to direct project involvement, Design Directors have responsibility for building and sustaining client relationships.

As a member of a Studio’s leadership team, Design Directors based in the San Francisco office will also collaborate with other practice leaders in the Northwest/Asia Region and across the platform of the firm to enhance the culture for design excellence, elevate the quality of design, and achieve recognition for clients and the firm.
