Job Description
CBS Radio seeks highly motivated part-time Associate Journalists for FM all news radio station inWashington,DC.
Associate Journalistswork closely with daypart managers, reporters and anchors andplay a vital, broad role in the news gathering process. Duties range from transcribing a news report one minute to writing breaking news stories for air and conducting off-air interviews with high profile newsmakers the next.
Typical responsibilities include compiling news fact sheets and weather forecasts, recording and editing incoming news feeds, writing business and sports headlines, coordinating “live-shots,” and updating the station’s website and social media platforms.
Other duties includemaking “beat check” phone calls to generate news, calling to confirm stories, answering phones, handing listener questions, screening calls from public relations firms, taking messages, and politely handling complaints calls by referring them to management.
The Associate Journalist position provides excellent potential for advancement. Those who excel will earn the opportunity to fill-in for daypart managers and get on the air.
Required Skills/Experience Pleasant telephone demeanor; Judgement to recognize the urgency of telephone calls (immediate, routine, can wait)
Capable of handling multiple tasks under deadline pressure
Understanding of digital audio editing (Adobe Audition, Garage Band, etc…)
Able to run an audio console and troubleshoot equipment and software difficulties
Excellent online researching skills
Well versed on current events
Solid knowledge of journalistic principles
Prior newsroom or related experience and college degree preferred
College seniors with a strong drive to succeed and can demonstrate all the requisite skills for the position will also be considered for part-time positions provided their class schedule allows for early morning, night, weekend, and/or overnight work
