Summary Benefits Supplemental Questions

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for participating in the fire training academy. Duties include attending class, taking exams and integrating classroom instruction during training exercises.

Cadets will attend a twenty-six week training academy (candidates with current EMT certification may attend an abbreviated academy). Successful completion of the academy is required to perform Firefighter duties.

Training will take place primarily at 3200 Amnicola Highway. Work days and hours will be determined by Fire training staff.

Series Level

The Fire Cadet is the first level of a six level firefighter series.

Essential Functions

(The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.)

Participates in fire academy training sessions which includes attending class, taking exams and integrating classroom training during training exercises.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Upon Successful Completion Of The Academy Duties Include

Responds to all types of fires and other emergencies; performs searches, suppresses and extinguishes fires and performs related life and property protection; provides emergency and medical care at a basic and advanced life support level; may perform vehicle extrications.

Participates in on-going training and education sessions.

Assists in preparing and ensuring emergency vehicles and apparatus are stocked and ready for immediate response.

Participates in the daily functions of the fire station which may include housekeeping, cooking, maintenance activities and/or performing other related duties.

Assists in completing and maintaining records related to personnel, incidents and/or other related items.

Participates in fire department programs such as pre-fire planning, fire prevention programs and/or fire hydrant checks.

Participates in and/or facilitates training sessions and station tours to the public on fire related topics.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Hazardous Materials

• Assisting in mitigating hazardous materials scenarios;
• Implementing site safety and control plans;
• Controlling, containing and/or confining hazardous substances.

Urban Search & Rescue

• Assisting in executing specialized rescue scenarios such as vehicle extrications, high and low angle rope/trench rescues, confined space/building collapse rescues, airplane entrapment rescues and other related activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a high school graduate or possess GED equivalency; be a U.S. citizen; be at least 21 years old and not have reached the age of 40 by academy completion date. Must pass a comprehensive background investigation and be honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces (if applicable). Must be able to pass a physical ability and fitness test; a post-employment medical examination; a polygraph and possess a valid Class D driver's license. Must not have been convicted of any felony charge; have not pleaded guilty to any felony charge or have not entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge and meet any other standards as set forth in Tennessee Code Annotated.

Within three months of your application date you will be notified of the testing process. Communication regarding this process will be by email and frequent checking of your governmentjobs.com account is recommended.

The written test consists of 80 questions and all answers are found in the study manual. Upon passing the written test with a score of at least 65%, you will be notified at a later date to take the physical ability and fitness test. Notices will be delivered by your notification preference when you submitted your application.

The next step consists of an administrative panel interview. Further processing will be conducted on candidates who pass these steps and are approved by Fire Administration. This process consists of a comprehensive background investigation and polygraph exam. Fire Administration and the Fire Chief make final hiring decisions. The written test is valid for three years and the physical ability/fitness test is valid for one year. If either of these tests expire, it is your responsibility to request a retest to keep your application active.

The Fire Cadet is a civilian, probationary position for the duration of the Fire academy.

Physical Demands

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and seeing.

Work Environment

Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises and infectious diseases.
