Medical and Dental Advocate The Children’s Aid Society Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program
The Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention program is a program of the Children’s Aid Society of New York (CAS), a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation that helps New York City children living in poverty succeed and thrive through a variety of programs and services. The Carrera program provides an evidence-based, holistic approach to empower youth and help them to avoid pregnancy by developing personal goals and the desire for a productive future. Carrera has a highly developed and tested model, and is one of the only adolescent pregnancy prevention programs in the country with statistically proven effectiveness, having been recognized as a Top Tier evidence-based program by the Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy. The program has grown significantly since its inception in 1984; today, the model reaches over 3,400 youth across 29 sites in the U.S., in both after-school and in-school settings. The role of the medical and dental advocate is to ensure that all program participants have access to and receive comprehensive, quality medical and dental services.
Responsibilities
- Schedule all medical and dental appointments
- Promote compliance with appointments and treatment plans
- Advocate for participants to ensure they are treated well at appointments
- Keep up-to-date records in database of all appointments
- Act as a liaison among parents/guardians, health care professionals and program staff
- *Supervise medical assistants as needed
Qualifications
- Able to travel to all five boroughs via public transportation
- Available to work on some Saturdays
- Master’s Degree preferred (MPH, MSW, MPA)
- *3-4 years of experience working with teenagers
