This job position is located in Bayview, Idaho at the Acoustic Research Detachment, NSWC. The Acoustic Systems Engineer performs acoustical engineering tasks associated with maintaining, upgrading and developing the Intermediate Scale Measurement System (ISMS) for testing. This state of the art underwater test facility performs radiated noise and target strength measurements on Navy research submarine models and other noise quieting technologies. Position may require infrequent travel one to two times per year.

Duties Include

  • Designing experiments to collect high quality radiated noise and target strength acoustical data, validating system performance and providing QA for final customer results, detecting and localizing system performance issues including characterizing electrical noise floors, linearity, and maintaining system accuracies through periodic electrical and acoustical calibrations.
  • The candidate shall be responsible for acquiring and maintaining expert knowledge of all acoustical aspects of the ISMS underwater test range including data acquisition, calibration, and processing systems.
  • Participate in the upgrade of the Near Field Receive Array to fiber optic sensors by developing modifications to system software and leading the calibration and validation of the upgraded system.
  • Maintain and enhance acquisition software that collects, processes, monitors, and analyzes ISMS acoustical data products.
  • Work with visiting scientists and engineers in developing test requirements, processing and interpretation of their acoustical and vibration measurements, and application of all ISMS electrical and acoustical calibration corrections.
  • Conceive, design, prototype, and develop tests and measurements to characterize acoustical performance and calibration of underwater acquisition systems that include hydrophones, pingers, and projectors.
  • Develop, test, and improve methods for localizing underwater test objects with higher degrees of speed, precision and accuracy.
  • Demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication skills that may be used in the creation of test plans, technical reports, presentations and interactions with customers and sponsors.
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, physics, or a similar field that includes training in digital signal processing.

2-5 years of related systems engineering experience.
  • Shall have experience in performing acoustical measurements and understanding the effects of absorption, reverberation, diffraction and/or refraction on underwater measurement results.
  • Must have experience with C and Matlab programming including software development process and source code control.
  • Must have in depth knowledge (such as a thesis or lab work) or a total of 2 years (minimum) of work experience in at least 2 of the following areas:
  • Transducer design and calibration
  • Acoustic systems modeling
  • Digital signal processing
  • Systems programming
  • Configuration management
  • Working knowledge of digital filter design, Fourier analysis, and/or waveform design is essential.
