    Position: Database Administrator I

    Location: Kansas City, MO

    Position Description

    This position assists the Database Administrator II in completing development work tasks and serving as a secondary for all facets of database administration and development. This is a non-supervisory position. This position is located on the Kansas City, Missouri campus.

    Key Job Responsibilites

    • Write scripts to create databases and database objects.
    • Write scripts to create views, procedures, and functions in support of application development.
    • Create packages and scripts to migrate data or perform ETLs.
    • Assist with the following: database definitions; backups; disaster recovery planning (jointly with the Systems Administrator and/or Infrastructure Management); security planning; account set up and access rights.
    • Assist with design of logical and physical database or review description of changes to database design to understand how changes to be made affect physical database (how data is stored in terms of physical characteristics such as location, amount of space, and access method).
    • Establish physical database parameters.
    • Code database descriptions and specific identifiers of database to database management system or directs others in coding database descriptions.
    • Configure user access level for each segment of one or more data items such as insert, update, query, or delete data.
    • Test, correct errors, and refine changes to the database.
    • Use of utility programs to monitor database performance including query execution plans, query execution times, indexing, and resource usage.
    • Direct programmers and analysts to make changes to database management system.
    • Train users and answer user questions.
    • Confer with co-workers to determine impact of database changes on other systems and staff cost for making changes to database.
    • Modify database programs to increase processing performance, referred to as performance tuning.
    EDUCATION/ WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS AND DESIRED SKILLS:
    Relevant bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university preferred

    • Requires a minimum of one year experience with one of the following; Oracle PL/SQL, T-SQL, or MySQL.
    • Experience with optimization tools such as Toad preferred.
    • Experience with data integration tools such as Microsoft SSIS preferred.
    • Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server certifications a plus.
    • Previous experience with Sungard Banner products a plus.
    • Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and by telephone) and in writing.
    • Able to multi-task, yet maintain close attention to detail and timeliness of work production.
    • Able to work in a positive team-oriented manner with a variety of people (students, faculty, staff, administrators, vendors, and members of the general public).
    • Language Skills: Able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Able to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Able to effectively present information to executive management, faculty, staff, students, and/or board of directors.
    • Mathematical Skill: Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
    • Reasoning Ability:Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
