Description

Assist the Head Nurse in the day-to-day medical needs of camp staff and campers; assist in reviewing medical information; assists Head Nurse in dispensing medications to staff and campers as needed according to physician's prescription. Assist the nursing staff as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position summary should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. Ensures the health and safety of all campers and staff by providing a safe environment as determined by the ACA Health and Wellness Accreditation standards;

At the beginning of each camp assist in making sure all cabins, pool, challenge course, office, etc. are supplied with full first aid kits for emergency use;

Assist Head Nurse with registration day check-in and paperwork;

Assist during the registration process of checking campers upon arrival at camp for lice and other evidence of illness, injury or communicable disease;

Assist with reviewing all Health History Forms (camper and staff) within 24 hours of their arrival (verify that everyone at camp has a Health History Form on file), and identify any camper or staff who has a health or medical situation that needs to be discussed with the Camp Director;

Assist the Head Nurse with dispensing medications to staff and campers as needed according to physician's prescription;
Assist Head Nurse during examinations and procedures;

Help supervise and care for people admitted to the Health Center;
Assist Head Nurse in keeping accurate records in the health log of all visits to the Health Center by campers and staff;

Keep the nurses' station clean and stocked;

Monitor and assist in maintaining health and safety practices while working in other areas throughout camp;

Assist with transportation to doctor's office or hospitals.

Other Responsibilities

Participate enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions;

Sit with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed;

Keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection;

Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director;

May accompany campers off-site for clinic visits;

Performs other related work as required.

Required Experience

Knowledge of general medical terminology;

Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth;

Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.

Mental And Physical Abilities

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff;

Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques;

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity;

Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers;

Ability to meet attendance requirements;

Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

Working Conditions

Some physical requirements of the Nurse Assistant position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.

Required Education

Two years' experience in medical and/or health, preferably in a camp or related environment preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Comments

Camp Staff Orientation is from June 17th – June 23rd. Head Camp staff must report to Camp Tomahawk by 12:00pm on June 15th. Camp Sessions run from June 24th – July 27th. Camp staff will be released at 12:00 PM on July 28th. Please let us know on your application if you are unable to stay for the entire camp season. Orientation is not optional.

Camp Tomahawk is a residential camp. All camp staff members are required to stay on camp grounds while camp is in session. Each week, camp staff must report to camp by 6:00pm on Sunday night and must stay at camp until all campers have been picked up on Saturday morning.
